Awards and Nominations Committees

40 Under 40 Selection Committee

Reviews nominations and serves as the selection panel for 40 Under 40 recipients.

Membership Requirements: Open to all previous 40 Under 40 recipients.

Awards Committee

The Awards Committee administers the Academy's individual awards programs, manages nominations and selections, and coordinates recognition of outstanding contributions to environmental engineering and environmental science.

Membership Requirements: Open to all members.

Environmental Communications Awards Committee

This committee administers the Environmental Communications Awards Program, establishes award criteria, selects judges, and oversees competition procedures recognizing exemplary projects.

Membership Requirements: Open to all members.

Excellence in Environmental Engineering & Science Awards Committee

This committee administers the Excellence in Environmental Engineering and Science Awards Program, establishes award criteria, selects judges, and oversees competition procedures recognizing exemplary projects.

Membership Requirements: Open to all members.

Nominating Committee

The Nominating Committee is responsible for identifying and selecting qualified candidates for Academy offices and Trustee-at-Large positions. It ensures nominees meet the eligibility requirements established in the bylaws and manages the nominations process for Academy elections.

Membership Requirements: Must be AAEES Board Certified.

Certification and Membership

Admissions Committee

The Admissions Committee oversees the Academy's certification programs, reviewing applications, evaluating examination results, and recommending candidates for certification AAEES Board Certification.

Membership Requirements: Must be AAEES Board Certified.

Certification by Eminence Committee

The Certification by Eminence Committee recruits, evaluates, and recommends distinguished professionals for Academy certification through the Certification by Eminence pathway.

Membership Requirements: Must be AAEES Board Certified..

Membership, Development and Outreach Committee

The MDOC oversees Student Member and Member programs, membership recruitment, outreach activities, university engagement, and membership growth initiatives.

Membership Requirements: Open to all members.

Recertification Committee

The Recertification Committee oversees professional development requirements, audits continuing education records, and manages the recertification process for Board Certification.

Membership Requirements: Must be AAEES Board Certified.

Students & Young Professionals

The Student & Young Professionals Committee promotes engagement, professional development, and leadership opportunities for students and early-career environmental engineers and scientists. The committee supports recruitment and retention of student and young professional members, fosters mentoring relationships, encourages participation in Academy programs and activities, strengthens connections with universities and academic organizations, and helps develop pathways from student membership to professional certification and long-term Academy involvement.

Membership Requirements: Open to all members.

Accreditation Boards

American Academy of Environmental Engineers Certification Board

The AAEECB serves as the Academy's independent environmental engineering certification authority. It reviews applicants and grants Certificates of Special Knowledge to qualified environmental engineers. Certification decisions are independent and cannot be modified or rescinded by the Board of Trustees.

Membership Requirements: Must be a BCEE for a minimum of five years.

American Academy of Environmental Scientists Certification Board (AAESCB)

The AAESCB functions as the Academy's independent environmental science certification board. It evaluates candidates and grants Certificates of Special Knowledge in environmental science specialties. Its certification decisions are also independent of the Board of Trustees.

Membership Requirements: Must be a BCEE, BCEEM, or BCES for a minimum of five years.

Management and Administration Committees

Audit Committee

The Audit Committee provides independent oversight of the Academy's financial affairs. It selects auditors, oversees the annual audit process, reviews financial controls, and reports audit findings to the Board of Trustees.

Membership Requirements: Open to all members.

Bylaws, Policies & Procedures Committee

The BPPC serves as the steward of the Academy's governing documents. It manages development, review, interpretation, and revision of Academy bylaws, policies, and procedures.

Membership Requirements: Open to all members.

Engineering Education Committee

The Engineering Education Committee supports accreditation and educational quality in environmental engineering, provides ABET-related leadership, recommends evaluators and representatives, and develops education policy initiatives.

Membership Requirements: Members should be active in ABET.

Executive Committee

The Executive Committee serves as the Academy's operational leadership team. Acting under authority delegated by the Board of Trustees, it oversees implementation of strategic and annual plans, monitors Academy operations and finances, coordinates committee activities, and provides direction to the Executive Director and Academy staff.

Membership Requirements: Must be an active officer of the BoT.

Finance Committee

The Finance Committee oversees Academy finances, develops annual budgets, recommends fees and dues, monitors investments, and reports financial conditions to the Board.

Membership Requirements: Chaired by the Treasurer and includes the President-Elect plus at least one additional member. The President may appoint additional members. Regular members serve two-year terms.

Government Affairs Committee

The Government Affairs Committee monitors legislation, develops policy recommendations, advocates on governmental matters affecting the Academy, and keeps members informed on legislative developments.

Membership Requirements: Open to all members.

International Relations Committee

The International Relations Committee helps position the Academy in international affairs, supports relationships with organizations worldwide, advises Academy leaders, and monitors international developments.

Membership Requirements: Open to all members.

K-12 Committee

The purpose of the K-12 Committee is to educate K-12 students on environmental engineering and science. The committee’s goals are to provide information to students in K-12 programs about the satisfaction of environmental engineering and science careers; and, encourage students to matriculate in environmental engineering and science through preparation of educational printed and web based materials and availability of speakers.

Membership Requirements: Open to all members.

Major Partners Committee

This committee strengthens relationships with Patrons, Sponsoring Organizations, Affiliates, and Partners while promoting membership growth and organizational engagement.

Membership Requirements: Chaired by the Vice President and includes two Trustees, one Trustee-at-Large, and a Past President. Membership may be expanded as needed.

Planning Committee

The Planning Committee develops the Academy's mission, strategic direction, annual plans, and five-year plans and advises the Board on organizational priorities and future needs.

Membership Requirements: Open to all members.

Technical Committees

Expertise and Examinations Committee (formerly the Development and Upgrading Examinations Committee)

The E&EC develops, maintains, and upgrades written and oral certification examinations to ensure they reflect current standards of competency in environmental engineering and environmental science specialties.

Membership Requirements: Must be AAEES Board Certified and serve as Chair of an individual technical committee.

The purpose of the technical committees is to develop new materials so that the oral and written examination processes will test the competence of the applicant to a level commensurate with the standards of competency established by the BOT. The respective committee shall review the examination questions and procedures not less than once every two years.

Membership Requirements: Must be AAEES Board Certified to access examinations. Other AAEES Members may serve in outreach opportunities.

Publications Committee

The Publications Committee oversees Academy publications, advises on content and publishing strategy, evaluates publications for sale, and supports quality and profitability.
