Gordon Maskew Fair Award
The Gordon Maskew Fair Award honors one of the pioneers of environmental engineering, Dean Fair. In addition to his own exemplary career, his living legacy includes hundreds of prominent practicing engineers and eminent professors who continue to emulate his values. He taught his students not only the technical aspects of the field but inspired them to use their skills to protect and enhance environmental quality.
Through the Fair Award, the Academy seeks to identify Board Certified Environmental Engineers, Members or Scientists who have contributed to the status of the environmental engineering or science professions by:
- Exemplary professional conduct
- Recognized achievements in the practice of environmental engineering and science
- Significant contributions to the control of the quality of the world's environment
2025 Gordon Maskew Fair Award Recipient
Michael K. Stenstrom, Ph.D., P.E., BCEE
Michael K. Stenstrom is a Distinguished Professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the University of California, Los Angeles. He has a Ph.D. in Environmental Systems Engineering from Clemson University and is a registered professional engineer in California. He has been with UCLA since 1977 in the capacity of assistant, associate professor, professor and distinguished professor in addition to several university administrative assignments, including Chair of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department.
He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in water and wastewater treatment and has performed research in several areas of environmental engineering. He has been a board-certified environmental engineer since 1989 and has won numerous awards, including the Poland Medal, the WEF Camp Applied Research Award and the AEESP O’Melia Distinguished Educator Award.
He is a Fellow of ASCE, AEESP, IWA and WEF. Professor Stenstrom in more recent projects has been working on stormwater management including best management practice, and beneficial wastewater reuse in highly urbanized environments such as Los Angeles. He is interested in the Salton Sea and has recently completed a modeling project to evaluate remediation options.
