Webinar Summary
Discover how the City of Morro Bay transformed its water future with the award-winning Morro Bay Water Resources Center. This session explores the design and construction of California’s first mainline Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) Indirect Potable Reuse (IPR) facility, delivered by Black & Veatch and Filanc. Learn how the team overcame regulatory, environmental, and budgetary challenges to replace an aging, flood-prone wastewater plant with a resilient, sustainable solution. The new facility treats all city wastewater, produces high-quality water for groundwater recharge, and protects the sensitive coastal environment. Innovative design approaches—including hillside “surfing” to minimize earthwork and eliminate pumping stations—helped save millions and ensure reliable operations, even during historic storms. Join us to hear how this project sets a new standard for water reuse, environmental protection, and community resilience in California.
Speaker Profiles
Kaitie Zusy is a Project Manager and professional civil engineer at Black & Veatch. She graduated from UC Irvine with a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering. She has been at BV for over 13 years and has worked on the planning, design and construction for various wastewater treatment and water reuse facilities throughout California for plants ranging in size from 1 MGD to over 200 MGD. She has worked on projects with varying delivery types, including progressive design build, best value/lump sum design build, and traditional design-bid-build. In her spare time, she enjoys skiing, hiking, reading and playing on the BV softball team.
Erick Bevington is a licensed Professional Engineer and DBIA Certified Design-Build Professional with 24 years of experience in the water and wastewater treatment field. Since earning his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Arizona State University, Erick has designed, or managed the design, of nearly $2 billion dollars of water and wastewater infrastructure. Erick moved to San Francisco Bay Area in 2011 where his career has focused primarily on wastewater treatment plants including three advanced wastewater purification centers for indirect potable reuse. One of those projects was the Morro Way Water Resources Center Design-Build project, for which Erick served as the Engineering Manager and Engineer of Record. Erick serves as the Director of Design-Build Engineering and Design-Build Solution Manager for Black & Veach.
